This year’s theme - “Mathematics and Creativity in Art” - resonates deeply with us. It perfectly reflects the approach we took to the restoration of the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany: a seamless fusion of engineering precision and artistic sensitivity brought new life to this thousand-year-old architectural ensemble, all while preserving its historical spirit.
The challenge extended beyond mere preservation; it was about transmitting the values of the past into the fabric of the future. Every detail, from the meticulously restored historic ornamentation to the contemporary guesthouse, reflects this dialogue. Collaboration among the monastic community, heritage professionals, and designers led to spaces honoring the Abbey’s legacy while resonating with contemporary life.
The Benedictine Abbey of Tihany represents more than a renovation project, it is an act of value preservation: a creative reawakening through which we unearth forgotten treasures layered in time. This year, the message of the International Day for Monuments and Sites holds particular relevance for us: preservation must not be seen as a static act of conservation. It is a generative, forward looking endeavor, in which centuries of history serve as the inspiration.
